At our core, United Way is a connector and convenor. We believe that long-lasting change occurs when we partner together and work toward a common goal. That’s why we’ve teamed up with organizations such as the Chicago Federation of Labor and the NFL to turn ideas into action. Through our partnership programs, we’re able to make tangible progress toward meeting the health, education and financial stability needs of our neighbors.
Many Chicagoans work multiple low-wage jobs and still struggle to make ends meet. That’s why United Way’s Access United program is focused on increasing access to skilled apprenticeships in the union trades. In partnership with the Chicago Federation of Labor, the Construction Industry Service Corporation and the Chicago and Cook County Building and Construction Trades Council, we’re expanding pathways to living-wage jobs for more workers across the region.
AmeriCorps is a network of 100s of community service programs across the nation. They foster civic engagement by mobilizing thousands of people every year to give of their time and move communities forward.
Nearly 65 million adults in the U.S. are unbanked or underbanked. They rely on costly alternatives such as check cashers, payday lenders and pawn shops for basic transactions. Through Bank On Chicago, United Way is working to increase financial literacy and access to affordable banking options.
Learning to navigate conflict and develop healthy relationships is an essential skill for success in school and beyond. In 2016, United Way, the Chicago Bears and Everfi came together to bring Character Playbook to 20 schools throughout the Chicago region. The curriculum helps students understand their emotions and cultivate positive relationships with their peers.
